Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has traditionally been known for its technically advanced and highly reliable 4x4s and performance cars. What people don’t know, however, is that Mitsubishi has also been developing electric vehicles over the last 40 years.

In 2006, Mitsubishi Motors developed the multi award winning all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) and it has been in the UK for two years demonstrating its ‘real car’ credentials.

The i-MiEV is a fully electric city car with zero emissions. It’s an electric vehicle which ensures no compromise in cabin space and comfortably seats 4 adults with room for luggage. It has a top speed of 81 mph, a range of 80 miles and can be trickle charged from flat to full in 6 hours at any UK three-pin socket – and it only costs 96p for a full charge. In addition, the i-MiEV can be rapid-charged from flat to 80% in just 30 minutes.

The i-MiEV is already playing a major role in the Government’s Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator programme being run by the Technology Strategy Board and is also part of the Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme, funded by the Department for Transport and managed by Cenex.

The i-MiEV is not only changing the perception of EVs within Government Agencies, Local Authorities and journalists, but also with members of the public. From being displayed at the Badminton Horse Trials, MotorExpo and Goodwood Festival of Speed, the i-MiEV has created a much more positive attitude amongst the public regarding the future of low carbon vehicles.
